MODEL, YEAR, FEATURES: This beautifully streamlined Deco tube radio was produced by Stewart Warner at a time when many radios were like sculpted works of art to display in the home. They called this one the “Campus” radio, probably because it was small and affordable for college students? The Model number 07-553 is stamped on the back of the chassis, and it dates to 1940. The red station dial has a pilot light behind it, and the Lucite pointer tip glows brightly to show you where your are on the AM band in a dimly lit room (see photos). The small knob controls Volume, and this five tube set stands just over waist high to an old 6.5 Oz Coke bottle. The antenna is a simple length or “hank” of wire to position and stretch out in a room for best reception.
CONDITION, SERVICING, PERFORMANCE: The Bakelite cabinet came from the factory painted an ivory white color. The last owner skillfully redid the finish a few years ago, and the cabinet displays beautifully without scratches, nicks, runs, or other flaws, retaining a smooth gloss; photos will represent it well. The station dial turns easily, and the pilot light illuminates it nicely. Electronics were carefully gone through with old wax / foil capacitors replaced along with the electrolytic filters and a weak tube. Tuning mechanism was lubed, radio was cleaned, and given extensive operation. It now plays across the AM band with fine reception with no hum or distortion, picking up most of our AM stations using the supplied wire antenna. The power cord was replaced with a safe pliable one, and the backboard is well intact with the Campus logo and antenna instructions legible. This late depression era Made in USA tube radio is ready to proudly display and play and will be packed with care.
DIMENSIONS, SHIPPING: Cabinet measures 10 inches wide, stands just 5.5 in. tall, and is 5.3 in. deep from front of knobs to the back panel; old 6.5 Oz Coke bottle in photo will give better sense of scale. I’ve shipped well over a thousand delicate tube radios all over the world for the past 18 years on with fine packing materials and methods, so no worries. Stewart Warner radio will be sent off on the day or day after payment is received..
