I found this super-rare sewing /embroidery machine in a Paris antiques market around 40 years ago.

Amazingly it was complete, with its pantograph, embroidery attachment and even the unique stand that clamps it to a table, and the isolated pedal with operates the machine through a cord attached to the main shaft.

I know a couple of others in collections around the world but only one in such a complete state.

And please check out the condition. It always amazes me that something that’s well over a century and a quarter old can survive in such superb condition.

But first a little history:

Julius William Von Pittler was born in 1854 and after an apprenticeship in gardening he worked for a flag-and-badge maker and was intrigued by the crude embroidery machines of the time. He filed a few patents for improvements to existing machines but, in 1887, he filed patents for his own machine – the one on offer here today. We’ve located the patent application and have shown the abridged version here – a copy will be provided with the machine.

With the aid of the pantograph it’s possible to reproduce embroidered designs. The only other known complete example was demonstrated a couple of years ago at a collectors’ meeting in Holland – to the wonder of the visitors there.

The machine comes complete with its pantograph, embroidery frame, pedal and table mount.

Machine itself is in amazing condition with virtually complete decals in red, gold and green. The only area of rubbing is at the base where the table clamp is attached.

It’s a surprisingly delicate and small machine measuring just 10 ½ inches across and only 8 inches high. Carries the brand name L\'Incomparable and the stamp of M H Rumpf of Paris who retailed the machines.

This model carries the serial number 2057, suggesting that very few were made.

Von Pittler is better known today as a maker of precisian lathes and other machine tools, abusiness he got into around the same time that he produced this little wonder.

It’s of heavy cast-iron and steel construction with interesting features – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a triangular-section needle bar before.
