The Best - LARGE WESTERWALD SALTGLAZED STONEWARE GR TAVERN JUG, circa 1715:
$971.01

Awonderfullarge pot-bellied Westerwald stoneware tavern jug of large size with exquisite bands of free-flowing sgraffito ‘honeysuckle\' flowers and trailing stems within finely-etched zig-zag borders; on the front of the juga superbly molded central medallion incorporating the GR cypher (in this case representing George I) underneath a large and very finelydetailed crown; Germany, Westerwald region, circa 1715.

We know this bulbous jug was made in the very early years of King George I\'s reign because the form of crown used in the applied medallionis also found on slightly earlier mugs and jugs with the AR (Queen Anne) cypher.

This fabulous jug is vary large - 10 inches in height and the diameter of the bulbous center is 7 3/8 inches. This GR is covered in the most exquisitely free and detailedsgraffitofoliage and flowerpatterns which somewhat resemble honeysuckle flowers. These are set within etched zig-zag borders. The GR medallion on the front is a work of art in itself and was probablymade using a brass mold as the detailing is incredibly fine. The crown and GR cypher are encompassed by a very finely detailedlaurel wreath.

The condition of this fabulous jug is generally excellent - there is a small area of restoration on the rim at the back, just above where the top of the handle joins thebody (you can see this clearly in photo #9). This is old restoration which has discolored a bit and could easily be re-done if you had a desire to do that. It measures approximately 11/2\" wide by 3/4\" deep. Thelines on the handle you can see in photo # 9 are merely surface lines and do not go through the handle. There is a tiny flake on the G of the GR and a tiny flake on the right side of the handle near the top.

This is one of the nicest and most unusual GR jugs we have had for a while and we are sure you will like it too! It would be hard to ever find a better example, whether for your personal collection or dealer inventory -preciousand few!12 photos above -Good luck and thank you for offerding!
