VERY FINE RARE LARGE OLD NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PIT RIVER WINTU INDIAN BASKET c1900 For Sale

A very fine stunning rare form early masterpiece of Northern Californian basketry originating from the Maidu or Wintu Indian tribes and dating from the very early 1900\'s. This fine hand woven bulging basket bowl is very finely woven fromsplit willow shoots, hazel shoots ,bear grass and maiden hair fern to produce the stunning complex intricate designs that surround the periphery. The design features some rare and striking patterns consisting of bands with multiple joined rows of spiked triangles in V shaped form representing birds in flight. Perfect balance between positive and negative elements resulting in a true masterpiece. The basket makers skill is clearly evident in the perfect form, fineness of the weave and pattern balance . The basket measures 9\"in max . Diameter and stands 5 \" tall and is in good condition , the weaver has chosen not to trim the top edge of the basket and has left the top weft strands deliberately exposed which leaves an uneven appearance . The basket displays well and has a fantastic patina from overall great age.This is an excellent stunning finely woven masterpiece.
