A very rare Northwest Coast Western Washington Quinault or Chehalis Indian round berry basketry bowl dating from the late 19th . The basket was collected in the late 1800\'s by James Mercer Vernon (1849-1926). a news paper editor from Ohio, who served as editor of the Everett, Washington Times from 1891-1901. The basket is woven from split cedar bark, thule and natural and dyed bear grasses to produce the complex stunning design that features alternating rows of horizontal bands and contrasting vertical stitch lines. note the fancy herringbone edge rim weave. The basket measures 7 1/2\" d and 5\" D and is in very good condition with no splits or repairs noted. Great aged patina from careful handling and use.This basket was collected during his time out west.Thisstunningcomplexmuseum quality basket displays very well and will make a fine addition to anyone\'s collection.
