Up for sale is a beautifully woven large old basket from the Yokuts Indian tribe from the Central California region of the US. Yokuts weavers are renowned for their excellent basket weaving, and this is a very nice old example. It is a traditionally woven basket with brown, dark red, and natural weavers forming a five part pattern with a series of figures around the rim with a rattlesnake motif between each pair - an absolute classic design. The weavers on the basket are quite fine, about 12 wraps and six coils per inch! The basket is made of coiled grasses over a rod foundation, and has a deep bowl shape. The rim is coiled, and the rim end is nicely tapered and finished off. A beautiful artifact!
The basket is a nice large size for one of these vintage Yokuts baskets, measuring a full 9½\" across at the rim, and with a nice depth to it, about 4\" inches deep. This basket is in good condition, with the following flaws to point out: Water and dirt stains as well as a light red streak on the interior. A few missing wraps on the underside, but this is the extent of the damage. There are no breaks or cracks or separated coils. The rim is completely intact. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket\'s features and condition. Despite its (relatively minor) flaws, this is a lovely example of innovative Yokuts Indian weaving from the early years of the past century and will make a beautiful addition to someone\'s collection of Western Native American baskets.
