This item was found near a Roman fortress wall! With clear traces of repeated use in ancient times! The light spots are probably from Roman mortar that fell out over time. Thank you!
After the Romans occupied these lands in Eskus, the V Macedonian Legion was accommodated. He wore the name of the province of Macedonia because he was filled with a large contingent of recruits there. Immediately in this place was built a wooden-earth camp, and then a solid stone wall was built.
According to the Roman tradition, near the city, a veteran village (cannabis) grew up, where many of the legionaries settled after being dismissed from service.
After the triumph of Emperor Trajan over the Dacians in which the Macedonian Legion took part, in honor of this notable event, Eskus was given the status of a city-colony, which was the highest degree in Roman provincial rule. This happened in 106. The city added to its name Ulpia as a sign of respect for the Emperor\'s father, Ulpius, and so began to be called Ulpia Eskus.
