This is a Lionel HO scaleIllinois Central freight set no. 5701, circa 1957 including; 0505 IllinoisCentral FM power A unit, 0811-25 Reading flatcar, 0862-25 Michigan Centralgondola, 0866 MKT stock car and 0857 Reading caboose all in Original Boxes. Theset is missing the 0872-25 Illinois Central reefer. The engine liner insert boxis damaged and the cellophane front window is missing, the 0866 and 0811-25boxes have all flaps attached and have bright colors and clean graphics but aremissing the cellophane windows. The 0811-25 Flat car is missing some stakes.

After57 years of being in the model train business, Lionel entered the growingH0-Scale model train market. While the other trains which Lionel produced wereconsidered to be toys, there was a growing market for “scale” representations.Lionel, theoretically, was in the best position to address this market, for ithad both name recognition and market distribution. There were establishedLionel dealers in almost all corners of the United States, along with strongpresences in the export markets.
Toget into the market quickly, Lionel first went to Rivarossi of Italy. In 1957,it fielded five train sets (which Lionel called “outfits”); unlike subsequentyears, these sets did not include a power pack:
