We are offering today for your perusal and offerding enjoyment, a fine old Boston banjo that managed to navigate all those years since 1895 in relative security, only to have a recent careless accident mar it’s near faultless condition. The details of this accident are unknown to us, but the results are there for us to see: the area around the 5th string nut has broken away, leaving a small chip out of the mahogany neck and a small ship out of the edge of the ebony fingerboard. The missing pieces are indeed missing. The damage is clean, never been messed with.Other than that, this banjo is in remarkable original condition. Dowel-stick is stamped both with the A.C.Fairbanks stamp, and the Fairbanks & Cole stamp.Serial # 14320. 11 3/8” diameter rim, 27” scale. Almost no playing wear, straight neck, great neck angle, old calf head is functional, but probably ought to be replaced. 30 original hook and nut sets, and the original bracket shoes. Even the original tailpiece bolt is here, sadly the tailpiece is not. Original finish and pearl inlays, a couple of which are engraved. Missing one pearl dot… actually, the inlays are cut from the most delicately-hued sea snail shell.A nice piece, needs some skilled attention to bring her back to life.
