Vintage Knox Fedora Hat 7 5/8 Milan Straw Gorgeous Puggaree Band:
$73

Now that summer's sweltering heat is upon us, you'll no doubt want to stock your hat rack with a handful of lightweight straw lids that will keep you looking cool & feeling comfortable when you're out `n about in the summertime heat. If you're like me, you'll probably want to reserve at least a couple of pegs on that hat rack for your vintage milan straw fedoras---a perennial summer favorite among dedicated hat wearers.
The milan straw fedora presently up for offers was made by Knox---a legendary name in American hat making. Tags, stamps, and trimmings indicate a late 1950s production date. This Knox is fashioned from a marvelous "nubby" textured type of milan braid that lends the hat a striking profile while providing plenty of summertime ventilation. Although this hat is 50 years old or so, it doesn't look its age at all; from all appearances, it would seem this Knox has spent most of the last few decades nestled safely in a hat box. Thanks to its classic styling, sharp color, and modest proportions, this terrific lid should prove to be the perfect accessory for just about any activity you have planned for the upcoming summer. Best of all, it's blocked in a hard-to-find larger size! If you've been looking for a nice hat to keep you covered while you indulge in a summertime frolic or two, this Knox will be hard to beat! Read on for all the pertinent specs & condition details:
Size & Dimensions: Tagged size 7 5/8. I measure the internal circumference (hard to do with absolute accuracy) as around 23 3/8" or so. This humongous hat wobbles around on my size 7 1/4 noggin, so I thought I would pass it on to someone with a more prodigious cranium than my own.
Brim measures 2" wide; it looks great worn up or "snapped" down in front (I've pictured it both ways). Telescope crown measures 4 1/2" tall. Pleated silk puggaree band is 2" wide. Brown leather sweatband is 1 3/4" wide.
Condition: Excellent. From the looks of things, this fedora hasn't seen much wear. The straw is still soft & flexible---no dryness, cracking, or breaks in the material. I can find no significant signs of wear or handling here. No stains or blemishes. The silk puggaree looks nice & clean as well.
I found the straw's color a little difficult to photograph accurately: in some of the pictures, it appears to be kind of a cafe aulait color, but I'd say it's just a bit darker than that (see the pics of the hat's interior for a better representation of the straw's color). I'd call this hat a taupe shade---brown tones seem to dominate, but there are some gray undertones here as well. The charcoal-colored puggaree with its pattern of gold & brown stripes offers the perfect complement to the straw's interesting shade. Overall, I think this hat will prove to be the perfect match for a wide array of the summer clothing in your wardrobe. I've taken the photos in natural light without flash in order to provide the best possible representation of these fetching colors.
Inside the hat, the leather sweatband is still soft & flexible; it exhibits no discernible signs of wear. Stitching is tight. Stamped in gold on the leather: the Knox logo, "Woolf Brothers" (the name of the hat's original retailer), and "HCF" (the original owner's initials). The maroon silk tipping pad bearing the Knox crest has one faint water stain, but it's otherwise clean. It is still securely affixed in the crown tip.
As you can see, this terrific Knox milan straw has enough summer style to beat the band! I dare say you'd be hard-pressed to find such an attractive & well-made straw fedora on the shelves these days. With this swell straw lid perched jauntily on your noggin, you'll be both looking & feeling cool all summer long! Great vintage milan fedoras like this Knox are getting harder to come by; if this fantastic hat fits, don't let it get away! Offered at a low starting offer with .
