Up for sale is a well-crafted and quite small old Mid-Atlantic Indian splint ash storage basket. It has beautiful detailing, with its colorful green and orange swabbed stripes on the sides. In fact, close examination reveals that the splints were painted before the basket was woven. The weaver also decorated the lid and the sides with orange and black potato stamping in a detailed floral pattern. The basket would have been made in the early years of the 20th century, and is nearly a century old. The basket\'s ash weavers have mellowed to almost the same color as the tinted splints, in fact the whole basket has a beautiful aged patina. The basket also features whittled ash rims wrapped with ash splints, and a bentwood ash frame. The lid is original to the basket, and has the same patterning. This attractive and well-crafted older Mid-Atlantic Indian basket will make a terrific addition to someone\'s collection.
The basket is a nice small size for one of these old Indian storage baskets, measuring 8\" x 6\" across at the rim and 5½\" deep. The basket is in really nice condition for its age. If you look carefully you can find a couple of missing rim wraps on the lid. But this is the only significant flaw and is actually very minor. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket\'s features and condition. It\'s a very nice near-antique Indian splint ash basket, makes a terrific piece for display.
