Vintage Malrov Fedora Hat 7 3/8 Stetson Whippet Style Bound Brim Grey Fur Felt:
$78.77

As this listing\'s title indicates, this marvelous vintage fedora features a dramatically wide 3/8\" grosgrain brim binding, just like Stetson\'s perennially popular \"Whippet\" model. The wide brim binding certainly adds an unmistakeable air of \"dash\" to this hat\'s profile, but this lid\'s resemblance to the legendary Whippet is just one of several distinctive styling elements that combine to make this hat a real head-turner! This hat is rendered from a beautiful shade of light grey fur felt and the crown is trimmed with an eye-catching grosgrain ribbon that features elegant striped accents. Add all that to the wide grosgrain trim around the brim and you have yourself a singularly striking lid, as the pics above make clear. This fine-looking felt hat was produced by the Malrov United Cap & Hat Co., Inc. Tags, stamps, and trimmings indicate an early 1950s production date. The Malrov name may not be all that well-remembered today, but from the 1920s through the 1950s, Malrov made oodles of top-selling felt hats as well as attractive men\'s caps in a variety of colorful fabrics. Malrov\'s men\'s accessories were known for their effective use of color and their overall \"fashion forward\" styling---this lid certainly possesses those characteristics in spades. This hat is in great shape and it\'s blocked in a hard-to-find larger size, to boot! If you\'ve been on the lookout for a Whippet-style lid with an extra dollop of style, this Malrov should be just the ticket! Read on for all the pertinent specs & condition details:Size & Dimensions: Tagged size 7 3/8. I measure the internal circumference (hard to do with absolute accuracy) as around 22 7/8\". This hat is a little loose & wobbly on my size 7 1/4 noggin, so I thought I would pass it on to someone with a slightly larger cranium than my own.Brim is 2 1/8\" wide; it\'s finished with the aforementioned 3/8\" wide grosgrain binding. Crown as creased measures 4 3/4\" tall at highest point. Grosgrain ribbon adorning the crown is 1 5/8\" wide. Condition: The felt & finish on this one are terrific. Thefinish is marvelously smooth and rich to the touch. The fur felt isvery soft and supple. Even though the felt is quite soft, itnevertheless manages to seem both dense & substantial at the sametime. This evident density indicates that the time, effort, and expensewas taken to ensure the felt\'s fur fibers were closely interlaced---or\"densely felted.\" The extensive rendering & finishing processrequired to create a felt hat body like this one produced hats that were bothsoft & durable; felt like this retains its shape & texture after wearand exposure to the elements in a way no modern hat can equal. Today\'seconomies of scale would make producing hat bodies like this prohibitivelyexpensive for modern hat companies. In short, they don\'t make `em likethis anymore, fellas. The felt itself looks nice & clean, overall: I can\'t see any significant signs of handling or wear. No stains or blemishes. I did find a couple of tiny, very shallow moth nips on the crown and a couple more underneath the brim. These little nicks are all quite small & unobtrusive---they won\'t be visible when you\'re wearing the hat. In fact, they\'ll be difficult to spot even when you\'re looking for them. Nevertheless, I\'ve taken a couple of extreme close-up pics (#s 10-12) so you can judge for yourself. All in all, I\'d say this lovely Malrov has seen very little in the way of wear. The felt is rendered in an attractive shade of light-to-medium grey. This color is at the \"cool\" end of the grey spectrum, with just a hint of a light blue undertone that gives the shade a nice smoky quality. The grosgrain ribbon trimming the crown is more of steel grey color, which lends the hat\'s profile a smart bit of contrast. The silvery striped pattern at the top & bottom of the grosgrain band helps make the whole color combination really \"pop,\" as it were. The wide silvery grosgrain binding around the brim edge adds a lovely coup de grace to the hat\'s overall profile. As you can see, the \"head-turning quotient\" of this Malrov is positively off the charts! I\'ve taken the photos in natural light without flash in order to provide the best possible representation of these splendid colors.Inside the hat, the leather sweatband is still soft & flexible; it exhibits nothing more than a hint of mild wear. Stitching is tight. Stamped in gold on the leather: \"Malrov Fine Fur Felts.\" The original owner\'s initials (\"WY\") are expertly punched into the leather. There are a couple of very faint water stains on the white satin liner, but it\'s otherwise clean. The colorful Malrov crest printed in the crown tip has faded just a tad over the years, but it\'s still legible. No doubt about it, this Malrov is a real stunner! In terms of construction quality & attractive styling, this lid could certainly give any mid-century-era Stetson Whippet a real run for its money. New felt hats featuring this level of distinctive styling certainly can\'t be found on the shelves today---and nice vintage examples like this Malrov are becoming increasingly scarce.
