Vernier Transit Compass circa 1870. 6 inch needle, 11inch telescope. Gurley made three sizes of this type6, 5 and 4 inch needle.The variation arc and vernierare attached to the plate outside the compass box.In the smaller sizes the vernier of the compass circle is within the compassbox.
The compass needle floats freely and the two level vials are full. Crosshairs are intact and focus properly.
The small diameter tube where the telescope eyepiece is mounted is not the original one.
The compass face is engraved in script W. & L. E. Gurley in an arc at North and Troy, N.Y. below South. According to C.E.Smart this Instrument was madebefore 1880 after then Troy, N. Y. appears at North.
