The item up for offer is a US Army Air Corps Type D-1 leather shearling jacket. The jacket is named to a Connecticut man who enlisted in 1942 into the US Army Air Corps. His name was Albert E. Haddock ASN31169072. Corporal Haddock served as a crew chief flying C-47\'s in the European Theater of Operations. I found his name in the coat while photographing. After googling his name and found his obit along with a photo of him later in life. I felt it was important enough to go along with the description. To add a little bit of personality, he certainly deserves that. He was 99 when he passed away last year. Another one lost of the Greatest Generation!

Designated \'Type D-1 Mechanics Shearling Jacket\', this model came into service with the Air Corp in the mid 1930\'s.

It would seem a rather lavish material to be making a mechanics jacket out of, but the D-1 like all clothing and equipment issued to US servicemen was typical of the motto \'only the best will do\'.

Similar to the shearling flight clothing the D-1 was made and issued as a two-piece suit - its companion bottom half being the B-1 trousers.

Its unfussy simple design, made from 1/4 inch fleece depth sheepskin, with two practical zippered front pockets, made it very popular not only with groundcrew, but aircrew as well. This jacket was made by Swerber Sportswear of New York and is a size Medium.

It is with sadness that the daughters of Albert Ernest Haddock announce the passing of their beloved father on Jan. 31, 2013, at the age of 99. Albert Ernest Haddock, father of Judith Shaw (husband Robert, deceased), of Madison, Sarah J. Myers (husband Wesley R.) of Branford, Patricia Haddock of Branford, Jeanne Orlando (husband David) of Guilford. Also, survived by his loving grandson Derek Shaw, granddaughters Kristin Rock (husband Bruce) of Ivoryton, Shannon Duncanson (husband Robert) of Madison, Holly Donnelly (husband Thomas) of Madison, Kelly Saranich (husband Robert) of Clinton, Kimberly Myers of Bellingham, WA, Karen Torello (husband Ryan) of Branford, Jennifer Raccaro (husband David) of Branford, Tara Claude (husband Gary) of North Branford, Jillian Orlando of Branford, 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Haddock was born in New Britain, CT on September 2, 1913, a son of Irish immigrants, the late Charles Haddock and Jane Ford Haddock. He was predeceased by his former wife Anne M. Haddock, son-in-law Robert Shaw, brothers William, John, Thomas, Charles Haddock and sister Gloria Haddock Lawrence. Mr. Haddock served in the Armed Forces of World War II, serving as a Crew Chief Mechanic, was a proud pilot flying a C-47 aircraft. Albert so enjoyed sailing in the waters of Long Island Sound, a horse back rider and owner of his beloved horse Rusty. Al loved to fish, feed his backyard birds and was an avid reader. The family would like to thank all the Doctors, nurses and medical staff of the Veterans Hospital within T3 West Hospice unit and 4th Floor West for their compassionate care of our father. He will be sorely missed by many, who were touched by his life.
