Complete Working 1905 Edison Projecting Kinetoscope * Provenance: Charles Edison:
$2302.0

If you're an uncompromising collector of antique technology, make sure to check out all my listings after you look at this one. I don't think you'll find a better, broader or more balanced assortment of technical antiques anywhere -- hundreds of no-reserve sales each year, almost all of them featuring eye-popping "gee whiz" gadgetry in exceptional original condition. And don't forget, you can click this link to quickly add and then save me to your favorite seller list and will automatically send you updates when I put similar new sales online. Here's a complete, working and exceptionally nice Edison Universal Projecting Kinetoscope, manufactured in Orange, New Jersey ca. 1905. The outfit -- in its entirety -- came from the estate of Charles Edison, by way of the Charles Edison Fund, and its condition is outstanding, as you might expect given the provenance. In fact, if there were such a thing as the Projecting Kinetoscope Of Your Dreams, this is probably it. There's some oxidation on the pressed metal film guard that covers the lower take-up sprocket in the back of the projector (visible in the photos), as well as on the film magazines and reels, but the metal surfaces are otherwise clean, with with only scattered minor marks consistent with age and use. Japanned surfaces on the iron castings are likewise clean, with enamel that's still glossy. Projection and stereopticon lenses are original, and both are correct. Lens elements are clear, with no fungus, delamination or other issues. Brass lens barrels are clean. Lamp house condenser lens is clear, with no damage. Mechanism is clean, and it runs smoothly, with a working bat-wing shutter. Pulleys are in good shape, and when the crank is turned, the mechanism advances smoothly, along with the reels. The gearing that drives the lower take-up reel is original, and it's working properly. The lamp house is not dented or damaged or missing hinges, and the door opens and closes easily. The burner has not been tested, but it appears to be sound, in good order, and complete. Beautiful original baseboard, with its original finish still intact, and its original hardware. Legs are original, and they're in excellent condition. Please note: the projector will be disassembled and shipped in several double-boxed packages to ensure safe arrival. Upon delivery to your door, you will be required to re-assemble it. If you're not comfortable putting things together -- and you don't know anyone who is comfortable -- this projector may not be for you. Re-assembly requires a bit of mechanical intuition, and it will take about 20-30 minutes to put everything back together. If you're comfortable assembling a bicycle out of a box, you should have no trouble assembling the projector. If the thought of assembling bicycle out of a box frightens you, well...this is not your sale. That's about it. I will package everything properly so that it arrives at your doorstep safely. I have been shipping fragile technical antiques for years, and if you check my response, you'll see that I know how to do it correctly. Buyer prepays and includes shipping. On Jun-21-21 at 03:25:28 PDT, seller added the following information: Please Note: If you look at the photograph that shows the upper magazine open, you'll see a second batwing shutter inside. This is the shutter that should be mounted on the front of the projector. The shutter that's mounted on the projector in the various pictures is from a Powers No. 6 that I'll be listing on in the next week or two. I acquired both projectors at the same time, stored both shutters in the upper magazine to keep them from being misplaced or damaged, and when it came time to photographing the Projecting Kinetoscope, I got the shutters mixed up and mounted the Powers shutter on the PK. So...only the correct PK shutter will be shipped to you with the Projecting Kinetoscope (that's the one you see in the magazine). You will also be shipped two empty reels for the two magazines (not pictured).
