WE SHOW A REPRESENTATIVE OF A MATTED PATENT FURTHER DOWN IN THIS EXPLANATION
HISTORY

As far as we can research, (there may be set in the library of congress) this seems to be the only set of these 1871/2 patents in the public domain. We have been told by several patent office employees that the patent office set of the 1871-72 group had been destroyed in the late1870\'s per a fire. We have located a few remaining partial sets in various closed collections… In 1869 the US Congress decided to change how the patent office was required to report the new inventions for each year. Prior to 1871 all the new patents were described and listed in the Annual report of the Commissioner of Patents. These listings were small and not always complete.

Starting in 1871 - all patent applications had to include black + white drawings …

Starting with 1871 a totally new method was used to list and describe each new patent for the year. Using the
OSBORNE PROCESS OF PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHIC PRINTING

In 1864 Osborne set up the American Photo-Lithographic Company in Brooklyn, New York, and was contracted to print the official US patent drawings between 1871 and 1874.

The Osborne is a transfer process: that is, the image is first produced on paper coated with dichromate gelantine, then rolled up in ink, developed, and finally transferred to stone, precisely the same as in the ordinary lithographic transfer processes.

Starting in 1871 each new patent was given a single sheet BLANK BACK litho print (s) along with attending pages giving the full information, specifications and description of the awarded patent. Some of the patents needed more then one litho and /or specification sheet per invention (some of these are more then one page and a few are double sided) but all LITHO print sheets are single sided and lithographic.

Thus, giving us today the ability to frame these great visual representations of the American INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.

THERE WAS ONLY ONE ENTRY FOR EACH NEW PATENT OF THE YEAR IN OUR SET

SO REMEMBER -- THESE LITHO\'S USUALLY ARE THE FIRST PREVIEW OF THAT NEW INVENTION -- (PERHAPS ONLY THE MOCK UP BY THE INVENTOR PREDATES IT) -- AND THUS IT IS THE VERY FIRST TIME THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC COULD SEE ANY NEW IDEAS OR PRODUCTS. IF YOU OWN ONE OF THESE ITEMS THIS PATENT WOULD PREDATE ANY EXAMPLES ON THE MARKET--

The US CONGRESS only authorized a \"MAXIMUM\" of 150 copies of each years sets.

THUS THE PATENT LITHO BEING saleED IS ONE OF THOSE 150 SETS

AND THE ONLY SUCH *ORIGINAL* LITHO FOR SALE IN THE OPEN MARKET

THUS, OUR STANDING ON THE RARITY OF THESE ITEMS.

With each new year only the patents for that year were included in that years volumes. We have met persons who have seen these volumes as a complete group and they all mentioned that, because of the large numbers of patents each year, eventually these limited sets began to take over entire floors of the holding libraries. Thus, when microfilming become accessible, these volumes were some of the first to go under the lens. Our set was fished out of a dumpster after being filmed many many years ago .We have searched, for years and have yet to locate any other sets or single vols of these great historical documents for sale on the open market. To the best of our knowledge all of the rare 1871-72 lithographs currently available to the public originated with our set. We have been allowing some of these to sell over the past 18 years and have finally decided to show them to the community.

SEE THE 2ndPHOTO FOR THE WRITTEN DETAILS OF THE PATENT FOR THIS sale.

---EACH sale INCLUDES ALL LITHOS AND SPEC SHEETS FOR THAT ONE INVENTION---

THIS IS A PHOTO OF THE SIGNED CERTIFICATIONWE ONLY HAVE ONE CERTIFICATION ---(WHICH WAS WITH FIRST VOL)--signed by the commissioner of patents in 1871

REMEMBER--- THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATION ---IS NOT INCLUDED

Thank you.

EACH PATENT LITHO IS GUARANTEED TO BE ORIGINAL ------size is approx. 7\" X 11\"-----These lithographs and attending spec sheets are utterly fantastic items. They lend themselves perfectly to being framed for exhibit with your collection or make great presents THE PATENT\'S WE HAVE COVER THE HISTORY OF THE Industrial revolution - science + technology - inventors - machinery - horse + farm equipment - tools - We have seen patents within the volumes for such diverse areas as: FARM ITEMS, CLOTHING, SEWING MACHINES, WOODWORKING AND MACHINING TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT, HAND TOOLS, RATTRAPS, FLY TRAPS, INSECT AND OTHER TRAPS, BEEHIVES, STONECUTTING, HOUSE BUILDING AND architectural, WEAPONS, FIRE EQUIPMENT, HORSE AND BUGGY, SHOES, HATS, ADVERTISING, STEAM RAILROADS AND EQUIPMENT, FURNITURE, BLACK SMITHING, TELEGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT, CHILDREN GAMES TOYS AND ASSORTED STUFF, PRINTING PRESSES, MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT, KITCHEN TOOLS AND GADGETS, WASHING MACHINES, MEDICAL DEVICES, EGG BEATERS, WATCHES AND CLOCKS, LOGGING TOOLS, SAWMILLS, SHIPPING AND BOATS, AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON.
