Ralph Kent was the head of theDisney Art department through the 1970’s-

“One time I remember he had beengiven some flak about that from one of the Disney execs who told him hecouldn't draw Disney characters for people. Ralph said to him, "Somebodyelse told me I could". When the exec furiously asked him who had given himthat permission, Ralph looked him in the eye and replied, “Walt did".Ralph meant it too, as he had started his careerback at the Disneyland art department in Anaheim sometime in the early 60's Ibelieve, maybe before that. He said Walt would often drop by the studio and wasquite friendly towards them all. According to Ralph, Walt actually encouragedthe Disney artists to do little sketches for people when asked, as he felt thatit was a nice little goodwill gesture. When Ralph was first approached in 1970to relocate to Florida to head up the new art services department that would beset up at the brand new Walt Disney World opening in 1971.

In1990, the Company (Disney) officially designated him as one of the "DisneyLegends" that year. In addition, he wasalso presented with his own "Window on Main Street", in the MagicKingdom in WDW.

LOS ANGELES - In the world of Disney, artist RalphKent was known by some as "The Keeper of the Mouse."

The artist was one of Mickey Mouse's handlers, concerned with maintaining the wholesome image of Walt Disney's most famouscreation. Mr. Kent trained other artists to draw the mouse uniformly, and hehelped determine which merchandise would carry his image.

During a nearly four-decade career, Mr. Kent became aspecialist on the finer points of Disney's world, the look of the characters, their personalities, and their interactions.

He was protective of their images. "He wouldn'tlet out certain merchandise, things Mickey shouldn't be on," said hiswife, Linda. ". . . Mickey was the standard-bearer of Disney; Mickey wasthe one that made Disney. He had to be kind of kept that way."

as a boy, Mr. Kent asked Walt Disneyfor a job. After Disney wrote a letter saying there were no jobs for8-year-olds and advising him to keep studying and drawing, Mr. Kent did justthat.

Mr. Kent also designed what remains amemorable Disney collectible: a limited-edition adult Mickey Mouse watch. WaltDisney gave the watch to his top executives in 1965.

Mr. Kent also was the man behindMickey's signature. For a while he was one of a few authorized to sign themouse's signature. After leaving Disney in 1985, Mr. Kent returned in 1990 andbecame a trainer of artists. I first met Ralph Kent back in1976. I was just a teen kid at the time, but I was able to arrange a visit tothe Walt Disney World art department during one of my family's annual vacationsdown to the Florida theme park. It was at that time I met character artist,Russell Schroeder, who is still a dear friend after all these years, as well asfellow artist, Harry Gladstone, both of whom would be instrumental years laterin helping me start my own career with Disney. Ralph Kent was the head of theart department back then, and he was quite keen on some little Disney figurinesI had sculpted and was showing to the guys down there. He said I should keep intouch after I finished my schooling and maybe they could get me down thereworking in the art department.
