African Ikhoko Antique Pendent Congo Protective Talisman Head For Sale

This African carved pendant known as “Ikhoko”, were worn by the Bapende people in what is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This country was previously known as Zaire, and from 1908-1960 the Belgian Congo. Such talismanic amulets give protection and strength to the wearer. This mask is delicately carved and is a beautiful example of an Ikhoko amulet pendant.
This piece was purchased from Xanadu Gallery in San Francisco in 2009 and it is believed to be from the1920s.Examples of these carvings are featured in Angela Fishers “Africa Adorned”
