We are offering a RARE 1861 CDV photograph of Edward Payson Weston, famous pedestrian (long distance walker) and founder of "Pedestrianism". Edward Payson Weston (1839-1929) reached fame when in 1861 he walked from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington D.C., a total of 453 miles from February 22 to March 4, 1861.After Abraham Lincoln had won the presidential election, Weston made a bet that he could walk from Boston to Washington D. C. in 10 days, in time to attend Lincoln's inauguration. Weston did make the walk in 10 days, but he arrived ten hours late for the inauguration. Lincoln was so impressed, he met with Edward Weston, and Weston attended the inaugural ball.After this, Weston became world famous.
Over the next 40 years, he made many walking trips including - Portland, Maine to Chicago; over 1,000 miles through New England in 30 days; all over England from 1876 to 1884; 100 miles from Philadelphia to New York in 6 days; 4,000 miles from New York to San Francisco in 100 days, and over 1,500 miles from New York to Minneapolis in in 51 days.
