We are offering a hand-written letter, dated May 21, 1935, from world renowned journalist and author, Frank H. Simonds [Snowville, New Hampshire] to Mrs. John H. Mitchell, Springfield, Massachusetts. Also, the envelope in which it was mailed.Simonds' letter is in response to Mrs. Mitchell's invitation [we assume for him to speak at a gathering] for the following autumn. Simonds thanks her for her invitation and writes, "I regret to say that I cannot make any engagements for next autumn because my present expectation is to leave for Europe early in November. Very truly yours, Frank H. Simonds".
Frank H. Simonds (1878-1936) - was a Pulitzer Prize journalist, military expert, and author. He reported for the New York Tribune, serving in the paper's Washington D. C. Bureau, and later became Associate Editor of the paper. Simonds had been a student of military history since he was a boy and had extensive knowledge of all the major wars of the world. As an authority on World War I, his newspaper columns did much to clarify for readers the confusing news from Europe. Simonds' five-volume book, "History of the World War" (1917-1920) was widely read. Simonds attended the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, the London Naval Conference in 1930, and many sessions of the League of Nations. He wrote over a dozen books and pamphlets on world affairs, including "The Great Powers in World Politics" (1935). Frank H. Simmonds died in Washington D. C. and was buried in Snowville, New Hampshire.
