Groucho Marx signs a document with Casablanca Records.
Typed Document Signed: "Groucho Marx" in ink, 1p, 8½x11. Los Angeles, Cal., 1974 October 24. Photocopy of typed contract on letterhead of Casablanca Records to Groucho Marx, c/o Erin Fleming, Los Angeles. In full: "Re: 'Here's Johnny - Magic Moments From the Tonight Show'. This letter will confirm the understanding and agreement between Casablanca Records, Inc., Casablanca Special Products, Inc. (collectively 'Casablanca') and you with respect to the above-captioned project as follows: 1. For and in consideration of the sum of $7,500 paid to you, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, you grant to Casablanca the option for a period of 30 days from date hereof for your services in connection with the filming and/or taping of a television and/or radio commercial in conjunction with the exploitation of the above-captioned project. 2. Upon exercise of said option, you will execute the Standard AFTRA Commercial Agreement which shall provide for payment to you of AFTRA scale payments for your services, of which the above $7,500 shall be deemed an advance." The double LP album, Here's Johnny -- Magic Moments from the Tonight Show, released in 1974 (the year of this letter), featured music and comedy sketches from the first 20 years of Carson's stint as host. Comedian GROUCHO MARX had a long association with The Tonight Show. After his game show, Tell it to Groucho, was cancelled, Groucho guest-hosted The Tonight Show after Jack Parr left the program and introduced JOHNNY CARSON as the show's new permanent host on October 1, 1962. Groucho was Carson's first guest and also developed friendships with two of the show's writers, Dick Cavett and Woody Allen, influencing a new generation of TV and film comedians. Groucho, who was 79 at the time of this letter, had made a comeback two years earlier, starring on a concert tour that culminated with a sold-out show at Carnegie Hall in 1972, but by the time he was awarded a special Academy Award in 1974, he was frail and in ill health. Despite his obvious physical problems, manager/companion, ERIN FLEMING aggressively pushed him to perform, making sure that the aging comedian's face was continually before the public. Fleming made national news when Groucho's son, Arthur, sued to have her removed as his father's caretaker, but Groucho (reportedly senile by 1976), refuted the accusations in the press and in court. The legendary comedian made his last public appearance at a deposition for the Fleming trial early in 1977 before dying that summer from complications from pneumonia. Lightly creased. Light type transference. 2 file holes at upper margin. Overall, fine condition.See more material from these signers:GROUCHO (JULIUS) MARX See more listings in our ACTORS & ACTRESSES (12,502) category.
