Black-bordered ALS: \"Lister,\" 2p, 41/2x7, front and verso. Portland Place (London), 1903 May 6. To Mr. Fry. In full: \"I cannot leave your most kind letter of April 30th without an answer, if only to thank your (sic) cordially. If it should indeed turn out that your colleagues agree unanimously to offer me this great honour, in spite of my inability to comply with the usual conditions, I could only accept with deep gratitude. But if there should be difference of opinion as to the expediency of the step under such circumstances, I should not be at all surprised. The list which you enclosed is indeed a distinguished one.\" The founder of antiseptic surgery, Lister made a study of inflammation and suppuration following injuries and wounds. In 1865, he began using carbolic acid sprays to kill airborne germs. He realized that germs were present everywhere, making it necessary for doctors and nurses to wash their hands and to disinfect instruments and dressings used in the operating room. This procedure saved nearly 50% of his patients who would have died from infection without the antiseptic conditions. In 1877, Lister demonstrated conclusively that his method of antisepsis reduced danger to life from surgery. Light stains on second sheet, else in fine condition.See more material from these signers:JOSEPH LISTER See more listings in our SCIENCE & MEDICINE (1,212) category.
