Lamellar D-plate armor leather armor Leather Breastplate Medieval Leather Armor:
$489.00

This is a handmade lamellar armor made with 1mm thick mild steel plates and genuine high quality leather. Most materials are locally sourced in The Netherlands and all materials are selected for their quality. A lot of my time is also spent on researching the history of these armors in order to make faithful and accurate reproductions. This means my designs are subject to change and slight alterations in my Etsy listings might occur from time to time when my designs are updated to better reflect their historic counterparts.
This is my own interpretation of the very popular D-plate/Visby lamellar armor, often mistaken as Viking armor.
The D shaped lamellar plates have been found at the archeological site of the battle of Visby (1361) and probably date from an earlier period, as lamellar armor was mostly obsolete in western Europe at the time of the battle of Visby. The two best explanations for the presence of lamellar armor at the battle of Visby are that either the armor was taken from the Levant by Scandinavian crusaders or it was robbed from a well preserved migration era burial mound.
This armor is not based on the armor found at Visby, but is rather my attempt to create a version of the very popular but non historic D plate armors that are widely available for purchase. The construction of this particular armor is different from most D plate armors. The lacing is done a little more loosely to give the individual rows of plates more flexibility and bend around the shape of the body for more comfort and a less tube like appearance.Another difference is a shortened breastplate that stops at the natural waist. This increases mobility and also creates the opportunity to fasten a belt around the waist to distribute the weight of lower part of the armor onto the waist instead of the shoulders. With these changes I want to create a good looking D plate armor that is not entirely historically accurate but is historically plausible, functional and practical.
The weight of the armor is approximately 8 kg.
