[1928 or shortly thereafter]. Very fine condition. Matted, wooden frame, glazed. Very scarce in commerce. Yale and Harvard hold copies.

     Early highway map of Illinois, with extensive text providing authorized service centers, hotels, cafes, index to cities and towns with population, etc. The date provided above is based on the date when the Federal government mandated that all established highway systems should use the number system. On the present map, for instance, located are U.S. Interstate Highways 54  56. 45,51 and 60 Auto travel at that time was truly an adventure, to say the least, and, in fact, was referred to as “auto camping.” The key gives a symbol for towns that have “tourist camps.” Obstacles encountered driving in the early days were extreme weather, flat tires, breakdowns, mud, sand, few gas or comfort stations, infrequent cafes and accommodations; but then again, one might be forced to sleep under the stars.
