This is an old receipt for a payment to the Norfolk Democrat for advertising.
The Norfolk Democrat was a newspaper that operated in Dedham, Massachusetts.
It started out in 1831 as the Independent Politician and Working Man\'s Advocate.
Later, it was known as the Norfolk Advertiser; then as the Dedham Gazette; later still,
as the Norfolk County Gazette; and later still it had other names. It continued
publishing until about 1930.The receipt is signed by Elbridge Gerry Robinson (1805-1854), who
at that time was the publisher of the Norfolk Democrat. Robinson was
the older brother of William Stevens Robinson (1818-1876), a notable
journalist who worked for a time on his brother\'s newspaper.
The receipt, dated 1850, is for a payment for advertising made by
the Boston & Providence Railroad. The Boston & Providence Railroad operated in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
