This kit upgrades your SOG Kiku XR LTE pivot bearings and washers from the OEM steel bearings to MUCH harderSi3N4 Silicon Nitride (Ceramic) ball bearings and hardened 420C Plus washers. This combination offers the least blade deployment resistance with the most reliability. Once installed, the ceramic bearings will be sandwiched between the blade's Cryo CTS XHP and the upgraded 420C Plus washers. Great bearings with hard, smooth surfaces are what gives a high quality folder incredible action. This makes the SOG Kiku LTE the best it can be.

With this upgrade kit, once broken in and your pivot tension is dialed in properly, your Kiku's blade will be smoother, faster and easier to deploy / retract with the most reliability. It will feel amazing for decades to come and will retain all the great sounds and feel of deploying your SOG Kiku blade. It will also not add any weight to your LTE knife. It should still be cleaned and lubed periodically.
***THIS KIT ISNOTFOR THE REGULAR SOG Kiku XR as the XR does not use the included washers, but the bearings will fit. NOR WILL THIS KIT FIT ANY SPRING-ASSISTED SOG KIKU KNIVES OR ANY OTHER SOG KNIFE MODELS WE KNOW OF OTHER THAN THE MODEL STATED. This kit also does not fit any Kiku knock-offs.

This sale is for our top-of-the-line Sever Duty Upgrade Ceramic bearing kit. It comes with our absurdly hard copper-caged 9-ball Silicon Nitride Ceramic thrust bearings paired with a set of super hard 420C + race washers. This combination works excellent together. We also sell Heavy Duty T304 Stainless washers which are not quite as hard as the 420C + washers, but are still much harder than the factory Kiku washers with the added bonus of being nearly rustproof. The ceramic/420C+ kits are the ultimate bearing kit for your Kiku XR LTE and it's what we have in our personal LTEs.
While it's fairly easy to replace the bearings and washers in your Kiku XR LTE, some knowledge of folding knife assembly is advised. There are no written instructions included with this kit as it is assumed you know what you are doing. After all, disassembly of your Kiku is a regular part of maintenance. Why not put it back together with better parts? We are posting a Kiku general service videoto show the various steps which will help Kiku is pretty easy to take apart and reassemble compared to many other knives out there, but it may take some finagling to get the Kiku's pivot through the body and blade, especially the first time you do it. You MUST remember to pull back on the XR lock when removing or installing the pivot. BTW, The pivot is a "capture pivot" meaning it must be installed in the correct orientation as it is D shaped, not round. Once you get familiar with doing this, you'll become a pro!
THE POLISH PAD...
If your kit comes with a Polish Pad, use it to polish the blade's tang where the bar lock rides on and the blade's bearing cups (see pics and video). Also polish the 420C+ washers to ensure smooth action. Use it on friction surfaces only, not on surfaces that can be seen when the knife is back together (however, it does shine up carbon fiber nicely). DO NOT use the polish pad on the ceramic ball bearings or anywhere else on the blade as it can affect the look of the finish. The pad is 4000-6000 grit, so it polishes metal at a microscopic level. It is a non-abrasive unless you use a lot of pressure. It can make a blade's satin finish or color finish blotchy, which can be difficult to fix, so just use the polish pad on metal where there is contact. Clean all parts before reassembly.
FYI... The Kiku LTE uses an odd size bearing and washer which are very difficult to source and often impossible to get in these exotic materials. If you can find them at all, buying them in bulk is the only way to make it cost effective, which is what led us to making these kits. This is a great step to customizing and personalizing your Kiku XR LTE.
TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS. Wash hands well before handling bearings and races and have cleaning swabs, paper towel and a flashlight ready. Consider putting some electrical tape or some other type of temporary protective cover over the knife edge to be safe while doing the installation. BE MORE THAN CAREFUL! We cannot and will not be responsible for any damages to your knife, property and/or person... period. Work slow, work smart!
It is only necessary to loosen and remove the pivot from the knife. All other screws DO NOT need to be loosened or removed from the knife just to do this bearing swap. The wrench supplied with this kit fits all screws on the SOG Kiku XR & LTE version. DO NOT STRIP THE SCREW HEADS. Insert the service wrench carefully and fully into the screw you're trying to loosen or tighten. Use of medium liquid thread lock is suggested, but not essential if you do regular knife maintenance / inspection.
THE POLISH PAD...If you wish, before reassembly, use the Polishing Pad to smooth the tang ramp where the bar lock touches the tang as seen in the last pic. You can also polish the blade cups and the 420C washers as well as the pivot. This will make deploying your Kiku blade as smooth as glass.The pad can be washed and reused many times.
WARNING...DONOTuse the polishing pad on the ball bearings themselves or the face or cutting edge of the blade and remember to fully clean and lube whatever bearing surfaces you use the polish pad on.
ABOUT THE PIVOT... The Kiku's pivot has a flat side ( it's a capture pivot which is D-shaped ) so it must be oriented properly in order to slide it through the knife handle and liners. The flat side faces the lanyard hole. It's a good idea to note the pivot's exact orientation and what side of the knife you've removed it from.
YOU MUST REMEMBER TO PULL BACK ON THE XR LOCK WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING IT.Orienting and reinserting the pivot will probably take some finagling the first time you do it. Don't get frustrated and don't use excessive force or tools! It gets easier, especially if you lube the pivot before reinstalling and again, remember to pull back on the XR lock during the pivot removal and reinstallation. Watch the video!
Prior to reassembly, remember to pre-lube the blade cups and bearings with the included lubricant. The PTFE lubricant supplied with kit is an excellent knife pivot lubricant. Lube the pivot and bearings again once knife is fully reassembled. Wipe off any excess lube. NOTE: If you see white spots or white residue in the One-Shot pipette, all this means the PTFE has settled out of the liquid carrier. To remix, simply put the sealed pipette in hot water for 5 minutes and lightly squeeze it to remix it.
After installation, if your blade needs centering, loosen the pivot adjuster screw and all scale screws with your Kiku service wrench and center the blade with appropriate centering shims (try using a couple of business cards as shims) while retightening all the screws, then remove the shims. If blade center is still way off, consider you may have installed the pivot on the wrong side.
We suggest keeping your Kiku's bearings and pivot clean and lubed. Some owners prefer to not lube their knives sighting the lube attracts dirt. The PTFE lube we've provided eventually evaporates leaving only dry PTFE (Teflon) to continue lubricating without attracting dirt.
Never over tighten a pivot adjuster screw regardless of bearing type. While these bearings are incredibly hard, damage could occur (like with any bearing) if you were to over tighten the pivot screw. You must "dial-in" the correct amount of pivot tension using the Kiku Service Wrench provided. Until the blade is in the full open or closed position, it is normal to feel some slop (looseness) in the pivot. The Stainless Steel thrust bearings in this kit are the same dimensions as the bearings that came with your Kiku XR. If the bearing becomes dirty, wet with dirty or salty water or is subjected to any type of chemical solvents, a cleaning and light reapplication of PTFE lubricant like Tri-Flow® is highly suggested.Dirt build-up should be blown out from the pivot area every so often as you should with any folder, especially if it has roller bearings of any kind.
