VINTAGE C.P. GOERZ BINOCULARS

Thisis a pair of 9-power, prism, Trieder series binoculars, made by C.P. Goerz ofBerlin. The Trieder series with a rack and pinion focus mechanism in 3X, 6X,9X, and 12X were the first prism binoculars made by Goerz and were manufacturedfrom 1897 – 1911. Some Trieder series binoculars such as this one employed rackand pinion central focus mechanism and IPD adjustment which although unique wasdiscontinued in subsequent models in favor of the more practical hinge design.Thetriangular barrels have rounded edges and are covered with original leather. The eye end of the leftprism housing is marked “C. P. GOERZ BERLIN.” The one on the right is marked“TRIEDER” and “BINOCLE” with the trademark initials “C.P.G.” inside a triangleprism in between. "9X" and "GERMANY" is stampedon the bridge connecting the barrels on the eyepiece end. The number “35896” onthe cross-frame is the production number indicating a production datebetween1900-1911. The frame is aluminumand brass. The eyecups appear to be made of a plastic material that is crackedon the left eyecup.(see image 3) There is a set of wheels in the center that adjusts thefocus. Another wheel adjusts the distance between the two halves of theinstrument. Printed on the outside of the connecting bridge is “B.W. PetersonWheeling, West VA” There are metal loops on the barrels where a strap one was. Etchedon the outside end of the barrels are the words “U.S. Navy” and “RO24350” Thecarrying case is leather with a dark velvet lining and is fitted to this pairof binoculars. All moving parts are fully functional but could benefit from agood cleaning.
