A very fine rare old Northwest Coast Nuu-chah-nulth , Nootka Makah abalone covered shell basket dating from the very early 1900\'s. Very finely woven ( with an amazing stitch count of approx 20-25 stitches per inch) from split cedar bark and naturally dyed bear grasses to produce the striking designs swimming ducks and a central banded checker work expression. An excellent example of finely woven Northwest Coast basketry .The basket measures 5\" x 3 1/4 and 1 1/3\" tall and with is in very good condition with no splits or repairs noted, some fading of the vegetable dyes as expected with great age.
