A fine rare early Northwest Coast Salish Skokomish Indian twined cooking basket originating from the Puget Sound area of Washington state. The basket is finely woven from split cedar bark and twined with dyed bear grasses to produce the simple but elegant bands of yellow and red diamonds that encircle the periphery with a fancy crenulated rim . This is one of group of baskets we acquired that were de-accessioned from the Burke Museum in Seattle. This very finely woven ( approx 30/stitches per inch) basket is woven from split spruce root and the complex stunning false imbricated designs from natural and dyed bear grasses in red, green, cream, purple and black . This basket measures 9\" D and 6\" tall is in \"as is \" condition with some burn marks from cooking noted on the bottom as well as a slightly collapsed side. This basket would have been used Ethnographically as a gathering or storage basket. This museum quality basket displays beautifully and is worthy of the finest collections. Please add $9.95 for careful shipping and insurance (USA), we\'ll be happy to combine shipping if feasible.
