Offered for sale and your consideration is a scarce and very desirable Sparton Model 558-C tube radio--Even more scarce than the blue mirror version this cabinet just screams Art Deco design with the peach color mirror and engraved mirror accents-Other than electrical cord having been replaced, this radio is otherwise all original and as found in a local southern estate. There are a few places on the front where the mirror backing has flaked and the parts of the case that are wood show normal wear-The left side upper corner has a small gap between the top and the side. The radio does turn on and the dial light works properly but the 5Y3G tube really gets hot and no sound from the speaker-The speaker cone appears to be in good condition-The dial knob turns but the dial string has broken-The tuner still rotates properly-2 of the bottom mounting screws are missing-In overall extremely good collectible condition just waiting to be restored!--This item will be packed carefully and double boxed-The radio weighs 22lbs by itself. Insurance is a must!
“The Sparton 558-C (copperor peach) tinted mirror tube radio was introduced in June of 1937 as a deluxeversion of the model 557 that debuted the previous year. All are attributed toesteemed industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague. Although similar to the 557,the 558 features extended engraving of the front mirror plus engraving of thetop and left mirrors. In contrast, the 557 has markings on neither its top norleft side. A distinctive feature of the 558 is the dark banding whichembellishes the front and top mirrors. This banding\'s disjoint nature createsthe illusion of depth, especially on top, where the eye is readily deceivedinto believing the fabrication is based upon two mirrors, one atop the other, rather than upon a single piece of glass.”
