This is a used Spyderco Harpy with black FRN handles and a fully serrated hawkbill. Blade stamped SPYDERCO G-2 STAINLESS and SEKI-CITY JAPAN. Back lock. Molded clip reads US AND FOREIGN PATENTS. No box.

Carried. The handle needs a scrub — grit in the Volcano texture. Blade still has the factory SpyderEdge and is quite sharp. Light corrosion at the ricasso / pivot area. A user, not a clean collector piece.

Specifications Pattern Harpy hawkbill folder Blade About 2-3/4\" hawkbill, SpyderEdge Closed / open About 3-7/8\" closed / about 6-1/2\" open Steel G-2 (Gin-1) Period 1990s Seki G-2 FRN run (Merlin / early FRN Harpy)

Condition Notes

Carried. FRN scales are soiled in the grip texture and would clean up with soap and a brush. Blade shows light corrosion / spotting at the ricasso and near the stamps — not a bright unused satin. Serrations look original and still cut. Back lock and hole function in the photos. No box. A working Harpy. Judge from the pictures. What is pictured is what ships.

Description & History

Sal and Gail Glesser founded Spyderco in 1976. Before Golden, Colorado, the company was a converted 1955 bread delivery truck and a Volkswagen towed behind it. They lived in the truck, worked fairs and trade shows as pitchmen, and sold a patented bench clamp called the Portable Hand plus whatever sharpeners and knives would pay for gas. Sal has said they left California with about $250 and a two-year-old. That was the whole firm: a married couple, a bread truck, and a folding table.

They settled in Golden in 1978 because they liked the name. First real product out of town was not a knife — it was the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, a ceramic V-sharpener that could hone serrations without eating the teeth. In 1981 they shipped the C01 Worker: pocket clip, round hole in the blade, serrated option on a folder. Those three ideas are now the modern EDC folder. The name Spyderco came from high-performance cars that used “Spyder,” plus “co” for company.

The Harpy (C08) followed in 1987. Sal put a marine hawkbill on a CLIPIT so line, netting, and webbing stay on the edge instead of skating off the tip. Same blade went into FRN as the C21 Merlin (1993–1996) and came back as the C08BK FRN Harpy in 1999. This example is that G-2 Seki generation — stamped G-2 STAINLESS and SEKI-CITY JAPAN — before ATS-55 and VG-10 took over the line.

Who built it in Japan. Spyderco uses more than one Seki shop. Knives marked only JAPAN are the Moki contract (Jess Horn, Calypso, Kiwi, and other higher-finish pieces). Moki asked for that stamp so they would not be confused with the other maker. Knives marked SEKI-CITY JAPAN — this Harpy included — come from the other Seki partner, the same volume house that built most Delicas, Enduras, and mid-90s CLIPITs. Spyderco has never put that factory’s name on the steel. Seki City itself is Gifu Prefecture’s cutlery town: sword smiths first, then pocketknives and kitchen steel for the export brands (Al Mar used the same “Seki-City” wording in the 1970s, which is why that shop kept it).

FRN Volcano grip, molded clip, back lock, Trademark Round Hole. Built to get wet and stay in a pocket. This one did. Clean the handle and oil the ricasso if you want it prettier. The edge is still the reason people buy a Harpy.

No box. Sold used.
