Vintage 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention Sticker Mayor Richard J Daley LiteTac:
$100.00

A little age yellowing, the covers to the adhesive are still there, and the adhesive is on the front side, so this could be put up in a window of a car or foyer and the folks outside could see the sticker. No tears. Very nice shape.
Sources Explain Sticker Background:
This piece of ephemera is a fascinating artifact from one of the most turbulent and historic chapters in modern American political history: the 1968 Democratic National Convention (DNC) held in Chicago. [1]The sticker provides a window into the political strategy and manufacturing of that era.🗳️ The Historical Context: "Daley's Chicago"The convention took place from August 26–29, 1968. Earlier that year, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced he wouldn't seek reelection, leaving the party fractured over the Vietnam War. [1, 2]Mayor Richard J. Daley, the powerful leader of the Cook County Democratic Party machine, was determined to use the convention to showcase Chicago as a world-class, orderly metropolis. To project a welcoming atmosphere, Daley's administration plastered the city with this exact "Hello Democrats! Welcome to Chicago" graphics campaign. The imagery was used on banners, posters, matchbooks, and bumper stickers. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]The friendly graphic of the straw boater hat (or straw hat) was a classic symbol of old-school political rallies and convention floor style. However, the cheerful "Welcome" message stood in stark contrast to the reality outside, where violent clashes erupted between anti-war demonstrators and the Chicago Police Department—an event later termed a "police riot." [1, 2] Production & Manufacturing DetailsWhat makes your specific item highly collectible to political ephemera enthusiasts are the factory-fresh details still visible on it:
  • The Design Layout: This isn't just a standard peeled bumper sticker; it's a pristine, unused format with its original side margins intact.
  • Lite-Tac Adhesive: The text on the left and right borders details the "Lite-Tac" technology manufactured by the Enterprise Tape Co. out of Dolton, Illinois. This tells us the sticker used a specialized self-adhesive backing designed to be clean and easily removable without ruining car bumpers or store windows.
  • The Union Bug: In the bottom right corner, you can spot the printer's credit for the Progress Printing Co., complete with an official union printing bug. In mid-century Democratic politics, using union-authorized print shops for campaign materials was practically mandatory to show alignment with organized labor.
