This BEAUTIFUL cotton daisy quilt is all hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted, with with sunny, solid yellow accents. It was made by Nellie Elisabeth Geron Newell (b. 1892), who married Ivan Bert Newell (b. 1/9/1895 - d. 1/8/1951) on 1/19/1914. They lived on a farm in Urbana Township, Champaign County, OH. She made the quilt in this farmhouse, now occupied by her grandson who is 68. I acquired the quilt from the grandson.
It measures a generous 98" X 98" and is in mint, never washed condition, with a couple of small, faint spots that should come out in this one's first wash, and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall, and the colors are as vibrant as the day the quilt was made.
The hand quilting is superb, with quilting around the piecework and in straight line and elaborate pinwheel designs in the background, all at an even 10-12 stitches to the inch, with faint pencil marks still visible in places. The date "1942" can be found hand quilted in one of the borders (see pic).
The back is white, the hand stitched binding the same solid yellow used in the interior, and the batting is thin.
The WONDERFUL DESIGN, BEAUTIFUL FABRICS, UNUSUALLY LARGE SIZE and NICE CONDITION make this vintage COLLECTOR'S QUILT stand out!
