The National Union Bank of Maryland began as the Union Bank of Maryland, chartered in 1804 and housed in a Robert Cary Long-designed building at Charles and Fayette Streets in Baltimore. It converted to a national charter in 1865 (Charter #1489) and by the mid-1870s held capital exceeding $1.25 million.
