Though born in Belgium, he was raised in France from a young age, and he would eventually become one of the most beloved figures in French cultural life. His parents moved to France when he was a child, and he grew up in Tourcoing and later in the Paris region. French became his principal language, and it was through this language that he would express his extraordinary creativity.During World War II, Devos was forcibly conscripted into German labor service and sent to work in a factory.
