A Magnificent Antique American Indian Chief Figural Tray

Far more than an ordinary catchall, this is a wonderfully sculptural antique solid brass or bronze tray depicting a Native American chief wearing an elaborate full feather headdress. The design is richly cast in exceptionally deep relief, with the chief’s face projecting dramatically above the tray and the sweeping headdress forming its impressive crest.

Everywhere one looks, another detail emerges—the carefully modeled facial expression, individually delineated feathers, long braided hair, decorated clothing, hanging ornaments and remarkably intricate textured background. Warm golden highlights appear naturally across the raised surfaces, while the deeper recesses retain a rich, nearly black-brown patina. Scattered touches of verdigris complete a surface that could only have been created through many decades of natural aging.

It is a small object with tremendous presence—the kind of antique that immediately commands attention on a desk, dresser, nightstand or display shelf.

Attributed to Judd Manufacturing Company

This design is attributed to the Judd Manufacturing Company, the noted Connecticut manufacturer responsible for an enormous variety of decorative cast-metal objects during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Judd firm became particularly well known for substantial cast-metal desk accessories, bookends, figural trays, smoking accessories, banks, match holders, doorstops and other useful objects enlivened by highly sculptural decoration. Its designers drew upon the popular imagery of the period, including animals, historic figures, Western subjects and romanticized representations of Native American life.

Judd pieces were decorative, but they were also meant to be used. Their best designs transformed otherwise ordinary household and office accessories into miniature works of sculpture. A pen tray might become a dramatic figural composition; bookends could resemble full sculptures; and a smoking accessory could carry the same visual impact as a much larger piece of decorative art.

Comparable examples of this particular design are identified as Judd Indian Chief cigar or pen trays. Although no factory mark is apparent on this example, its form, casting style, subject and construction correspond closely with known Judd decorative metalwork. It dates most plausibly to approximately circa 1910–1925.

This is an antique American decorative object—not a Native American-made ceremonial or ethnographic artifact. Its imagery reflects the romanticized Western themes that were enormously popular in American art and advertising during the early decades of the 20th century.

Exceptional Sculptural Detail

The level of relief is what truly separates this piece from the ordinary.

The chief’s face is fully modeled rather than simply stamped or lightly embossed. His prominent nose, cheekbones, brow, mouth and contemplative expression are all carefully defined. The long hair falls around the face and blends into the detailed clothing below.

Behind him rises a spectacular full feather headdress. Each feather has been individually shaped and textured, creating a bold silhouette when viewed from above and an almost architectural appearance from the side. Additional feathers, circular ornaments, braided elements and long decorative strands frame the face and extend into the body of the tray.

The recessed tray itself is covered with finely worked textures and ornamental details. Its mottled surface catches the light differently from every angle, while the high points have acquired glowing brass and copper-colored highlights through generations of careful handling.

This was clearly not conceived as a disposable ashtray. It was intended to be an attractive and substantial desk or smoking accessory worthy of display in a home, office, study or clubroom.

Its Original Purpose

The curved notch centered at the open end was formed to support a cigar, strongly suggesting that this was originally sold as a single-cigar tray or cigar rest. The recessed body provided space for ash, spent matches or other small smoking accessories.

During the early 20th century, a gentleman’s desk, library or smoking room might contain an entire assortment of coordinated metal accessories—a match safe, inkwell, pen tray, cigar cutter and ash receiver. Manufacturers such as Judd elevated these functional objects with elaborate historical and figural designs.

The Native American chief would also have carried an unmistakable connection with period tobacco advertising. The image of the “cigar-store Indian” had been associated with tobacco merchants for generations, making this subject particularly appropriate for a cigar accessory.

It may also have been marketed more generally as a pen, pin, card or desk tray. Many early decorative trays were deliberately versatile, and owners undoubtedly used them for whatever small articles needed a proper resting place.

A Striking Modern Catchall

Although its original cigar rest survives as part of its history, this tray is remarkably adaptable for modern use.

It would make an unforgettable jewelry tray on a dresser or nightstand. Rings, cuff links, earrings, bracelets or a favorite watch would look spectacular resting against the aged bronze-colored surface.

Solid Brass or Bronze Construction

This is a substantially cast piece made from solid brass or bronze, not thin stamped metal. Its weighty construction and deep three-dimensional modeling give it a far more impressive presence than its relatively compact measurements might suggest.

The metal has developed a magnificent naturally aged surface. Deep chocolate-brown and nearly black tones dominate the recessed areas, while the high points display warm brass, bronze and copper-colored highlights. Small areas of natural green oxidation appear in protected crevices, adding further depth and unmistakable age.

The surface has not been brightly polished, and thankfully so. Its dark, complex patina is one of the most beautiful and desirable features of the piece. Polishing would erase much of the contrast that presently brings the chief’s face, feathers and ornaments so dramatically to life.

Despite its manageable size, the broad headdress and deeply projecting face make it appear much more substantial when displayed.

Condition

The tray is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, breaks, repairs or other structural damage observed.

The deeply cast facial features, feather headdress, hair, costume and ornamental details remain exceptionally well defined. The cigar-rest notch is intact, as are the delicate projecting portions of the headdress and side ornaments.

The surface retains a beautiful, naturally developed deep patina with warm highlights and scattered green oxidation. There is expected surface wear, rubbing and color variation consistent with age and historical use. These signs of age are attractive and contribute enormously to the character of the piece.

The underside also displays considerable age and oxidation but no observed damage. The tray rests as intended and presents beautifully from every angle.

It has deliberately been left unpolished so that its exceptional old surface remains intact. Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the description and illustrate the condition, patina and extraordinary level of detail.
