ANTIQUE WESTERN APACHE ATTRIBUTED NATIVE AMERICAN COILED BASKET BOWL – DEVIL’S CLAW – EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Offered for sale is an attractive antique Native American coiled basket bowl, attributed to the Western Apache of Arizona, and believed to date to the early 20th century.
The basket measures approximately 5-1/2 inches wide at the rim by 3-1/2 inches tall.
This example has a deep bowl form with a relatively narrow base, upright-to-flaring sides and substantial wrapped rim. It displays a bold repeating geometric pattern in contrasting natural golden/tan and dark brown-to-black plant fibers.
The dark design material is believed to be devil’s claw (Martynia), traditionally used for contrasting designs in Southwestern Native American basketry. The lighter material is believed to be a traditional plant fiber such as willow. Materials have not been independently tested or verified.
The geometric decoration continues around the interior and exterior, making this an attractive display piece from multiple angles.
