The Ward-Burton rifle was the first true bolt action breechloading long arm to be issued for US Military use. Invented by Bethel Burton, a Brooklyn, NY inventor who patented his bolt-action system just before the Civil War and by Colonel William G Ward, (12th NY Militia, captured and paroled at Harpers Ferry in 1862). Colonel Ward, also an inventor was able, in 1871, to persuade the US Ordnance Dept to accept and issue the Ward-Burton rifles to some troops, but ultimately the conservative US Ordnance Department adopted the 45/70 Springfield Trapdoor rifle, and didnt adopt bolt-action rifles until 1892, well after European armies.
