Pre-WWII Imperial Japanese Navy Private Photo Album 64 Photos Ships Aircraft:
$550.00

DescriptionThis is an original prewar Imperial Japanese Navy-related private photo album containing approximately 64 photographs.Unlike a commercially published commemorative photo book, this album appears to have been privately assembled by an individual, with photographs carefully mounted on black pages and many accompanied by handwritten captions identifying ships, locations, events, and other subjects. The album contains a remarkably broad range of Imperial Japanese Navy subjects, including the battleship Ise, cruiser Naka, destroyer Hatsuharu, other Japanese naval vessels, torpedo firing, naval aircraft, Oppama Naval Air Group, the Naval Engineering School, the Naval Academy at Etajima, group photographs of sailors, and scenes aboard ships and at sea.It also includes portraits of important Japanese naval figures including Admiral Togo Heihachiro, as well as photographs related to the Argentine Navy.Of particular interest is a large group photograph associated with Naval Engineering School trainees in 1928, providing a direct visual record of the men and educational environment of the prewar Imperial Japanese Navy. Why this album is rareThis was not mass-produced as a standard photographic publication. An individual appears to have selected, arranged, preserved, and annotated the photographs personally. While individual photographs within the album may have existed in other copies, the particular combination of approximately 64 photographs, their arrangement, and the handwritten captions makes the album itself essentially a one-of-a-kind historical artifact.Private naval photograph collections are particularly valuable as historical records because they preserve combinations of official, privately obtained, and sometimes personally taken photographs that would otherwise have been dispersed or lost. Japanese institutional collections likewise preserve Imperial Japanese Navy photographic albums as historical source material. It is not known whether the original owner personally took all of the photographs. Some may have been acquired or exchanged during naval service, so the photographer is not attributed unless clearly identifiable.Rather than documenting only warships, this album brings together ships, naval aviation, torpedo operations, naval education, personnel, training, and everyday naval scenes, providing an unusually broad visual record of the prewar Imperial Japanese Navy.Approximately 64 photographsThe album and photographs show age-related toning, stains, scratches, wear, and other signs of age. Please carefully examine the photos for condition.Shipping
