A charming vintage Scandinavian tomte (also called nisse) Christmas gnome figure, standing approximately 9 1/2 inches tall to the tip of his hat - a larger, more substantial display size than the typical small tomte figures of this style. He has a turned wood head and legs, a gray felt robe belted with a thin leather/suede cord, red knit mittens and stocking cap, a fuzzy gray wool beard, and a hand-painted smiling face with rosy cheeks. He's holding a small woven straw Yule goat (julbock), a traditional Swedish Christmas symbol, tucked under one arm.
This style - gray felt robe, red knit cap, wool beard, and straw goat accessory - closely matches figures produced by Ljungströms of Sweden, a well-known family wood-turning workshop founded in the 1940s in Holsbybrunn, Småland, that has been hand-making these tomte figures for decades. I don't see a maker's tag/label currently attached (these were often on a small paper sticker that can fall off over time), so I can't guarantee the maker with certainty, but the craftsmanship and design are consistent with their work.
The underside of one foot is stamped "Made in Sweden," and the other foot has a handwritten batch/date code ("81-12" and "1-12" visible in photos - exact meaning not confirmed by me, so please review that photo yourself and draw your own conclusion).
Condition: Pre-owned vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The wool beard sheds some loose fibers (normal for this material and age) and there is minor wear/fraying to the felt robe at the underarm area, visible in photos. The straw Yule goat accent is present and intact but delicate - please handle with care. No breaks noted in the wood components; both wood shoe/feet bases are stable and the figure stands well on its own.
