Description
The bracelet has a classic sterling silver curb-link chain with a rectangular ID-style center plaque. Applied prominently to the front is the gold-filled Naval Aviator insignia, beautifully detailed with outstretched wings, central shield and anchor. The warm gold color against the aged sterling silver makes this an especially striking example of vintage military sweetheart jewelry.
Military sweetheart jewelry was traditionally worn or treasured by wives, girlfriends, mothers and other loved ones as a sentimental connection to a serviceman. Pieces incorporating military insignia became particularly popular during the wartime years and are now highly collectible.
The reverse of the plaque is clearly marked:
L.G.B.
STERLING
The clasp is also marked STERLING.
The applied Naval Aviator emblem is gold filled, creating the attractive two-tone sterling and gold appearance.
The Naval Aviator insignia is associated with U.S. naval aviation and has been worn by qualified aviators of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Without provenance identifying the original serviceman, I am conservatively describing this as a Naval Aviator sweetheart bracelet rather than attributing it exclusively to one branch.
Measurements: Approximately 71/2 inches long
Center Plaque: Approximately 1¾ inches long
Weight: Approximately 12 grams
Condition
Very nice original vintage condition showing authentic age and use. There are surface scratches and wear to the sterling plaque along with attractive natural patina throughout. The gold-filled Naval Aviator emblem remains remarkably crisp and detailed, with its contrasting finish showing beautifully against the sterling silver.
The curb chain is substantial, and the vintage clasp is intact. The bracelet has not been aggressively polished, retaining the character and patina one hopes to find on an older piece of military sweetheart jewelry. Please examine all photographs.
