c1910s US Navy King Neptune Crossing Line Ceremony Sailors RPPC AZO Photo For Sale

Crossing the Line ceremonies were long-standing naval initiation traditions held when a ship crossed the Equator. Sailors who had never previously crossed were known as “pollywogs” and, after completing the ceremony before King Neptune and his court, became “shellbacks.” This postcard captures a particularly striking ceremonial scene from that tradition.

The reverse has an AZO real photo postcard stamp box and is unused/unposted. Four black album mounting corners or remnants remain visible at the corners, indicating the postcard was formerly mounted in an album.
